Scout is a tool and online portal developed by the NSW Department of Education providing access to data which supports planning, reporting and evidence‑based decision making for education professionals. It delivers insight into trends and relationships, saves time and is able to produce customisable reports to meet the needs of its users. To embody the ideas of intelligence gathering, data analysis, and navigating seemingly difficult terrain to reach a desired ‘destination’, we developed a brandmark for Scout incorporating the ideal symbol for navigation — the compass.
Considering the audience, the visual identity has been given a friendly, approachable appeal through typography and colour that positions it front-of-mind for teachers and other educators, helping it to stand out from the array of less memorable online tools they invariably wade through on a daily basis. In addition to the tool and portal branding, we provided a suite of print collateral and functional brand templates to help Scout achieve internal adoption.
